ASMT Fall Conference 2009

Successful Transitions for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

September 26, 2009

Speaker: John Thomas, M.Ed.
Location: Lipscomb University – Ezell Center

Conference Description

As the family of a young person with an autism spectrum disorder looks toward the transition from school into adulthood and adult environments (such as college, the work place, or independent living), the process often can appear overwhelming, uncertain and confusing. Establishing a plan and having educational support in the development of adult life skills can be an essential foundation to this process. Though the law requires that this process begin by age 14 in Tennessee, the foundational skills can be built beginning early in a child's life! So, even if a child is currently in elementary or middle school, this presentation will give you ideas on how to begin preparing for transition after high school.

In his presentation, Mr. Thomas will focus on foundations for successful adult life, particularly teaching and data collection for these specific skills: Independent Living, Communication, Appropriate Interactions, and Vocational Skills.

Mr. Thomas will share the key components of the TEACCH Transition Assessment Process and how to analyze a scholastic/work environment to determine what supports are necessary. Specifically, he will review ongoing community-based assessments, and all steps of the documentation system including the pre- and post-instructional assessment (community-based), the daily data system, and the references developed from successful experiences of individuals with autism.

During this conference, the attendee will learn:

  1. To identify the steps of a thorough transition assessment.
  2. How the transition assessment relates to IEP goals and transition planning.
  3. To identify the use of community-based instruction in developing jobs skills for students with autism.
