"Are you thinkin' what I'm

Theory of Mind: Where Social Cognition,
Language Development, and Behavior Meet
Featuring nationally acclaimed speaker
and author
Diane Twachtman-Cullen, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
Autism Society of Middle Tennessee
Fall Conference
Saturday, September 27th, 2008
Scarritt-Bennett Center
1008 19th
Ave. South
Nashville, TN 37212
When theory of mind “works” as it does in neurotypical
individuals—one gives nary a thought to how crucial a role it plays
in understanding and negotiating the social world; how it affects joint
attention (sharing of one’s experience) and language development; or
how it impacts behavior.
During
this conference, Dr. Twachtman-Cullen will address what it means to have
theory of mind and how impairments in this critical social cognitive process
affect social understanding, language development, and overall behavior.
The presenter will draw on information from research literature, and will
address need-based intervention for deficit areas. The attendee will take
away helpful knowledge and easy-to-implement intervention techniques to
help the child(ren) who brought them to this conference.
This conference will be helpful for parents and families, as well
as educators, therapists, and other professionals who work with individuals
with autism spectrum disorders.
During
this conference the attendee will learn:
- How
theory of mind impacts social behavior and language learning.
- How
deficits in theory of mind affect joint attention and word learning
- How
deficits in theory of mind affect perspective-taking and behavior.
- How
to address theory of mind deficits.
- Various
intervention techniques that address theory of mind impairment.
Theory of Mind
Theory of Mind is the ability to understand that others have thoughts
and feelings that are different from one’s own. Those who have trouble
with theory of mind might have trouble
- knowing
when to stop inappropriate behavior despite visual cues from others
- recognizing
tone of voice or understanding facial expressions
- understanding
others’ feelings
- learning
to use words
If you know someone like this,
then this is a conference for you!
